Scholarships help to secure future for students, veterinary industry
Pfizer Animal Health
and the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Foundation provided financial support to 29 veterinary medical students this year through a scholarship program. A past recipient, Sarah Krall, recently shared her thoughts with Progressive Dairyman on the program and her path to becoming a veterinarian.
Herdsmen and vets benefit from E.T. training
Three days of intense training produce more than just sore arms for students of Precision Diagnostic’s embryo transfer course. A diverse group of herdsmen and veterinarians from Maine to Pennsylvania gathered in August to learn the process of transferring embryos into recipient cattle.
Annual event teaches dairy lessons to people of all ages
Michigan State University hosted a week of dairy-focused events July 19-23 during the 14th annual Michigan Dairy Expo. The week included a full schedule of youth contests and activities, a youth and open dairy cattle show, a sale to raise money for scholarships and youth dairy programming; and kid-focused activities for youth and families from Lansing and the surrounding areas.
Vita Plus Chick Day draws record attendance
What started as a small event at a restaurant in Northern Wisconsin has grown from 15 participants to more than 150. The Vita Plus Chick Day is an event for women to gather, see another dairy operation and learn from speakers and one another. This year it was held Aug. 20 at Ocooch Dairy near Hillsboro, Wisconsin.
Town, county officials join dairy producers for twilight meeting
In an effort to educate local officials about modern agriculture, the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) joined forces with the Wisconsin Counties Association and Wisconsin Towns Association as part of the Agriculture Community Engagement (ACE) program to host two old-fashioned Twilight Meetings on Aug. 11 and 12.
Artemio Salazar: Providing your family the opportunity of a future and a better lifestyle
Artemio Salazar, a milker at Burk-Lea Farms in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, learned the meaning of “working for a living” at an early age. He maintained the work ethic he learned as an adolescent with every job he had. Salazar has worked milking at dairies, a job he is content with, for the past seven years.

Manure from livestock operations can have a negative perception by the general public – it can smell, attract flies and, if not handled properly, can cause environmental concerns. But one family in Idaho is working hard to change that perception through environmental stewardship and an innovative approach to manure management, and by all accounts they are succeeding.

New Technology: Fluff up solids for added comfort PDF Print E-mail

1310pd_lee_technology_1Moisture can be a real problem in freestalls bedded with manure solids. It aids the growth of bacteria, which can lead to herd health issues. Raking freestalls bedded with manure solids is a common practice to combat the moisture, but many times it just scratches the surface.

Looking for a better way, dairyman Mark Barroso of Merced, California, designed and built the Freestall Rototiller. Unlike other rototillers, this one runs off the PTO of a small- to mid-sized tractor that can provide 60 to 100 horsepower.

Whittle Farms use gravity to its advantage PDF Print E-mail


1310pd_lee_whittle_2When the Whittle family in Volga, Iowa, began contemplating a switch to sand bedding, they knew their manure-handling system would also need an overhaul to make it an optimal change. The end result incorporated sand settling lanes and weep cells, something they had never seen done before.

Whittle Farms is a 500-cow family dairy farm. It is owned and operated by Tom and Cheryl Whittle and their children: Mike and his wife, Hollie; Deb and her husband, Lanny Deitchler; and Pat.
